Primary text

No compensation is due for returning a found item or a stray animal, or for performing any service other than returning an absconding slave (*aibaq*), if no payment (*ja'l*) was agreed upon beforehand. There is no known disagreement on this principle. This is because the action warrants compensation only when there is an exchange agreement (*mu'awada*); consequently, it does not warrant compensation in its absence, similar to a contract of lease (*ijarah*).
