What is the distribution of compensation if one designated person returns an item assisted by others who claim to be helping?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Lost-and-Found Property
Primary text
If one person is designated to receive a compensation for returning an item, and he returns it along with two others, and the two assistants state they were helping him (the designated person), the designated person receives the entire compensation, and the other two receive nothing. This is because the other two acted without a designated reward for themselves.
Supporting text
If the two assistants state they participated in the return to claim the compensation for themselves, then the designated person receives only one-third of the total compensation because he performed one-third of the work, and the other two receive nothing as they worked without a designated contract or earning.
