Is it obligatory upon the one who takes possession of lost property to publicly announce it?

It is not obligatory for the one who takes possession of lost property to announce it. This is supported by the practice of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who did not announce the lost items he gathered.
