Primary text

If one arranges witnesses for the finding of lost property, it is not necessary to mention its specific characteristics to the witnesses, lest the information spread and claim by those not entitled occurs. Instead, the finder should state to the witnesses what is mentioned during the announcement (ta'reef), such as the type and kind of property. Ahmad stated that when asked if one should detail the property when arranging a witness, he replied negatively, saying only: 'He has found lost property.' It is recommended to write down the characteristics of the property to better preserve the memory against forgetfulness.
