What is the maximum value of an item permissible to take without announcement based on the concessions granted by the Prophet (PBUH)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Lost-and-Found Property
Primary text
The permissibility is limited to what the Prophet, peace be upon him, explicitly mentioned and singled out for taking without announcement: the stick, the whip, and the rope, and items whose value is equivalent to their value. Sheikh Abu Al-Faraj estimated this limit to be less than a Qirat in his book, but this specification is deemed invalid based on the argument that precise quantification requires explicit text or consensus, which is absent.

The narration where Salman bin Rabi'a and Zayd bin Suhan told the finder of a whip to throw it away, but Ubayy bin Ka'b later affirmed the finder's action, indicates that items such as the whip are permissible to keep. This hadith is classified as Hasan Sahih by Al-Tirmidhi.
