What is the ruling on the found money given to Umar?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Lost-and-Found Property
Primary text
When a finder brought nearly one hundred dinars found in a cloth to Umar, the ruling prescribed was to announce it at the door of the mosque for three days. After that, the finder should keep it until a full year has passed. During that year, the finder must inquire about any travelers arriving, especially those coming via the route to Sham (Syria). After the year, the finder has full disposition over the item, as indicated by Umar's statement, 'Then the matter is yours regarding it.'
