Book of Maintenance (Nafaqāt)
Primary text
If a husband can only provide maintenance day-by-day, this does not constitute inability to provide (I'sar) that establishes the right to dissolution of marriage, because this is what is obligatory upon him, and the provision is quantified for him. Similarly, if he provides enough food for the morning meal at the beginning of the day and enough for the evening meal at the end of the day, dissolution is not established for the wife because her basic sustenance is met. If a craftsman works for a week to sell enough for her weekly needs, dissolution is not established because this fulfills sufficiency throughout the entire period. If earning or selling is impossible for a period, dissolution is not established because borrowing until the obstacle passes and earning resumes is possible. If he is unable to borrow for a few days, dissolution is not established because this situation will soon pass and many people experience such temporary inability.
