Primary text

The husband is obligated to provide clothing for his wife based on the consensus of the scholars and because clothing is perpetually necessary, thus falling under the obligation like sustenance (nafaqa). The clothing must be sufficient for her needs and is not fixed by specific legal measurements but determined by her sufficiency. The judge determines the amount based on their means (affluence or hardship) and the customary practice of their peers. For the wealthy wife married to a wealthy man, the finest cloth, such as linen, fine silk, or pure silk, is due. For the poor wife married to a poor man, coarse cotton and linen suffice. For the middle class, a middle standard applies. The minimum obligation includes a shirt, trousers, a head covering (miqna'a), slippers, and a winter garment, with additional items added based on customary necessity, excluding those purely for beautification or adornment. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah: {And for those who are divorced, their maintenance and clothing on a fair basis} (Quran 2:233), and the Prophet's statement: {And they have rights over you regarding their sustenance and clothing according to what is fair} (Hadith reference unspecified, general statement of principle), and the Prophet's instruction to Hind: {Take what suffices you and your children on a fair basis} (Hadith reference unspecified).
