Primary text

The father is obligated to facilitate the marriage (I'faf) of his son if the son is in need of it and the father is responsible for his maintenance. This obligation extends to all individuals for whom maintenance is obligatory, such as a brother or an uncle. The supporting reasoning is that if maintenance is due, facilitating marriage, which is necessary for complete maintenance, is also due, similar to the father's obligation towards his own father. Furthermore, the obligation to facilitate marriage implies the obligation to provide maintenance for the son's wife, as marriage cannot be consummated without it. Support for this comprehensive obligation is derived by analogy with the obligation of a master to marry off his male slave if requested, otherwise the slave is sold.

Supporting text

Some scholars hold that the father is not obligated to provide marriage facilitation for his son. Furthermore, there is a reported opinion from Ahmad that the father is not obligated to provide maintenance for the son's wife, although this is interpreted to apply only when the son himself is capable of providing her maintenance.
