Primary text

The maintenance is divided equally, half and half, between the daughter and the daughter's son. Furthermore, in the case where a daughter and a son are present, maintenance falls upon the daughter.

Supporting text

Abu Hanifa states that the maintenance is solely upon the daughter because she is nearer in relation. Al-Shafi'i rules that maintenance is entirely upon the son because he is a residuary heir ('asabah). Additionally, one of two opinions among Al-Shafi'i's school holds that maintenance falls upon the daughter's son because he is a male.
