The maintenance between a son and a daughter is divided into thirds, corresponding to their shares in inheritance. This manner of division follows the principle that maintenance is arranged according to inheritance shares, supported by the Quranic verse stating, 'And upon the heir is the like thereof' (Quran 2:233).
