Is the master financially responsible for the maintenance (Nafaqah) of a Mukatab (manumitted on an installment plan)?

Chapter on Maintenance of Slaves

Primary text

The master is not obligated to provide maintenance for a Mukatab. The contract of Kitabah (manumission agreement) grants the Mukatab ownership of his earnings and usufructs, restricting the master's ability to utilize him, hire him out, lend him, take his earnings, or claim compensation for injuries against him. Because the master bears no financial obligation, his liability for maintenance ceases, just as it would cease if the slave were sold or freed. Should the Mukatab default, he reverts to full slavery, and the master regains ownership of his services and earnings, thus re-establishing the obligation of maintenance upon the master.
