Is the master financially responsible for a slave who becomes ill, disabled, blind, or loses their earning capacity?
Chapter on Maintenance of Slaves
Al-Mughni
Book of Maintenance (Nafaqāt)
Primary text
The master is obligated to provide for and maintain a slave who becomes ill, disabled, blind, or loses their earning capacity. This obligation stems from the fact that the maintenance (nafaqah) is due by virtue of ownership, similar to how it is obligatory during the slave's minority. Since ownership remains despite blindness or disability, maintenance remains obligatory, supported by the general nature of the relevant texts mentioned at the beginning of the chapter.
