What is the measure of maintenance according to Imam Al-Shafi'i?

The maintenance for the one in straitened circumstances is measured by the Mudd of the Prophet (peace be upon him), because the minimum given in expiation to one person is one Mudd. Allah the Exalted considered expiation analogous to the maintenance of the household, saying: "From the average of what you feed your families" (Quran 5:89). The wealthy person owes two Mudd, because the maximum amount Allah obligated for one person in the expiation for causing harm is two Mudd. The moderately situated person owes one and a half Mudd, which is half the maintenance of the wealthy and half the maintenance of the poor.
