Is the Mukatab obligated to provide maintenance for his free children and relatives?

Primary text
Maintenance for the Mukatab's free children and relatives is not obligatory upon him because this obligation is based on the principle of mutual support (muwasah), and he is not considered among those qualified for it. Consequently, he is not obligated to pay Zakat on his wealth nor Fitra on his person. If his wife is free, the maintenance of their children falls upon her because the children follow her status regarding freedom. If the children have other free relatives, such as a free grandfather or a free brother accompanying the mother, each relative must provide maintenance according to their inheritance entitlement, treating the Mukatab as if he were non-existent concerning maintenance obligations.
