What necessities must a husband provide for his wife concerning personal upkeep and cleaning items?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Maintenance (Nafaqāt)
Primary text
The husband is obligated to provide the wife with items she needs for personal upkeep, such as a comb, oil for her hair, and 'sidr' (or similar items) for washing her hair, and anything else contributing to her cleanliness. This obligation exists because these items are required for purification, similar to how the tenant is responsible for sweeping and cleaning the house. This provision is incumbent upon the husband.

Regarding hair dye ('khidab'), if the husband does not request it, it is not obligatory for him to provide it, as it is sought for adornment. However, if he requests it, then it becomes his obligation. As for perfume, if it is intended to stop body odor, such as deodorant for sweat, it is obligatory. If it is intended for sensual pleasure and enjoyment, it is not obligatory, because enjoyment is a right belonging to him, and he is not obliged to provide what leads him to that enjoyment.
