Primary text

There are three views concerning the priority between a father and mother. The first view mandates parity between them due to the previously mentioned reasoning (equality in closeness). The second view prioritizes the mother because she is more deserving of good treatment, possesses the virtue of carrying, suckling, and raising the child, and has greater compassion, being weaker and more helpless. The third view prioritizes the father due to his superior merit, his sole authority over his child, his right to take from the child's wealth, and the Prophet's attribution of the child and his wealth to the father, stating: 'You and your wealth belong to your father.' The first view, parity, is deemed the soundest.
