It is recommended that the host sit with the servant and eat together if the servant prepared the food. If the servant does not sit to eat, it is recommended that the host offer the servant some of the food, even if it is only one or two morsels. This is based on the narration from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'If one of you provides his servant with his food, protecting him from its heat and smoke, let him call him to sit with him. If he refuses, let him feed him a morsel or two.' This hadith is recorded by Bukhari. The meaning of 'tarweeg al-luqmah' (feeding a morsel) is dipping it in broth and fat to moisten it before giving it to him. Furthermore, the servant desires the food because he was present during its preparation and oversaw it, which is analogous to the divine command: {And when relatives and orphans and the needy are present at the division [of the inheritance], provide for them therefrom} [Quran 4:8]. Also, the presence of a person makes their desire for the food greater than that of one who is absent.
