What is the ruling on severe striking or slapping the face of a slave?

Severe striking (darb mubraḥ) of a slave is prohibited, even if the slave has committed an offense. Likewise, slapping the slave's face is forbidden.
Supporting text
The prohibition against harsh treatment is supported by the report of Abu Mas'ud, who was admonished by the Prophet, peace be upon him, while striking a youth, reminding him that God has more power over the youth than he does over the slave, implying restraint from excessive force.
