When is the determination of solvency or insolvency to be made regarding an obligation?

The determining factor is the moment the obligation is declared, as that is the moment of necessity (*hal al-wujub*). If a person becomes wealthy (*yusir*) after this declaration, the manumission (*i'taq*) that was previously binding does not become effective retroactively. Conversely, if a wealthy person subsequently becomes insolvent (*u'sir*), the obligation that was due does not become void, as it was established and is not nullified by subsequent insolvency, similar to a debt incurred through destruction (*dayn al-itlaf*). Ahmad explicitly stated this principle.
