Can a person's principal assets, such as a house or land, be sold to meet obligations?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Manumission
Primary text
Ahmad stated that a house (*dar*) or fixed properties (*raba'*) are not to be sold to meet this obligation, implying that one's core assets should not be liquidated.
Supporting text
Malik and Al-Shafi'i held that articles of a house, such as a ring (*siwar*) made from the house's materials, and surplus clothing may be sold, and judgments regarding these matters are treated as they are treated in other disputes.
