Is the ability to provide financially a prerequisite for the obligation or desirability of marriage?

The apparent view of Ahmad is that the obligation or desirability of marriage is not contingent upon the ability to provide financially. He stated that a man should marry, and if he has provision, he should spend, and if not, he should exercise patience, citing the Prophet's practice of sometimes having nothing in the morning or evening, and the marriage of a man who only owned a loincloth.
