Prohibition of marriage is divided into two types: prohibition of the essence (Tahrim 'Ayn) and prohibition of combination (Tahrim Jam'). Furthermore, these are categorized into prohibition by kinship (Nasab) and prohibition by relation/cause (Sabab). The foundation for these prohibitions is established in the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah. Specifically, the Quran states, "Forbidden to you are your mothers" (Quran 4:23), along with the preceding and succeeding verses. The Sunnah establishes this through the narration of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "A man shall not combine between a woman and her paternal aunt, nor between her and her maternal aunt," which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'Alayh). The Ummah has reached consensus on the prohibition of what Allah has explicitly prohibited.
