Is the consideration of kafa'ah (competence) required for a man in marriage?

Primary text
Competence is considered for the man in marriage, but not for the woman. This is because the Prophet, peace be upon him, had no equal, yet he married women from the Arab tribes and married Safiyyah bint Huyayy, and took slave women as concubines. Evidence for this is given in the narration that whoever has a slave woman, teaches her well, treats her well, then frees her and marries her, has two rewards, which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh). Furthermore, the child derives honor from the father, not the mother, so competence is not considered for the mother.
