Primary text

If the required compensation (*wajib*) for a slave's injury exceeds the slave's market value, the master is not obligated to pay the excess amount. The obligation upon the master corresponds only to the value of the slave. This is evidenced by the fact that if the master were to surrender the slave in lieu of compensation, nothing further would be due from him. By paying the slave's value, the master has satisfied the obligation related to the person of the slave, thus precluding any further liability for an excess payment.
