What financial obligations does the father incur regarding the son's slave following intercourse?
Chapter on What is Prohibited to Marry and Combining Between Them and Other Matters
Al-Mughni
Book of Marriage
Primary text
The father is not obligated to pay the value of the female slave, the value of her offspring, or her deferred dower (Mahr). This is based on the principle accepted by the scholars that the father may take whatever he wishes from his son's wealth, and the son cannot claim debts owed by the father or compensation for property damaged by the father.

Shafi'i holds that the father is liable for the value of the slave, the value of the child, and the Mahr if he rules that she becomes an Umm Walad. This difference stems from the fundamental disagreement regarding the extent of the father's authority over the son's property.
