The correct understanding, affirmed by Ibn Abbas and 'A'ishah, is that Barirah's husband, Mughith, was a slave belonging to the Banu al-Mughirah. This is the supported position according to the narration of the scholars of Medina, whose practice lends greater authenticity to the tradition. The conflicting narration stating he was free is attributed solely to al-Aswad, making it less reliable than the consensus of the Medinan scholars and those closest to 'A'ishah.
