What is the legal status of the child of a partially manumitted slave?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Marriage
Primary text
The child of a slave who has been partially manumitted inherits the partial servitude status that reflects their mother's condition. If the master redeems this child, the master is only obligated to redeem the portion of servitude remaining in the child, as the remaining portion is free by virtue of the mother's freedom, not by the presumed permission of sexual intercourse (I'tiqad al-Wat').
