Primary text

The children of a person who believed in their own freedom are considered free, without scholarly dispute known. This is because the belief in their own freedom necessitates the freedom of their offspring. This ruling is likened to the case where a man purchases a female slave whom he believes belongs to the seller, but it later emerges that the slave was usurped; any children conceived by her while under his possession are still considered free due to his initial belief regarding the source of their parentage.
