Primary text

Shighar is defined as a man contracting his daughter in marriage to another on the condition that the other man contracts his daughter to him in marriage, without any specified dowry between them. Another authenticated narration specifies it as a man saying to another, 'Marry your daughter to me, and I will marry my daughter to you,' or 'Marry your sister to me, and I will marry my sister to you,' with no specified dowry.

A differing narration, based on Ibn Umar, states that Shighar is when a man marries his daughter to another on the condition that the other marries his daughter to him, and there is no dowry between them. The authoritative view is that any form of this condition—stipulating the marriage of one in exchange for the marriage of the other—voids the marriage contract, even if the condition is not explicitly stated regarding the dowry.
