Primary text

The ruling concerning a manumitted slave marrying his master's daughter is similar to that of a regular slave, in that the marriage is dissolved upon the death of the master. This is established because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stated, "The manumitted slave remains a slave as long as he owes any dirham." Furthermore, if ownership over him ceases, it does not revert upon his inability to pay, similar to the case of manumission.

The Companions of Ra'y (Ahl al-Ra'y) maintained that the marriage remains intact because the master has not attained ownership over the *mukatab*; rather, the *mukatab* owes a debt to her. This opinion is incorrect based on prophetic tradition and legal analogy.
