Primary text

If a man converts to Islam while married to a Kitabiyyah (woman of the Book), or if they convert simultaneously, the marriage remains valid in its current state, regardless of whether the husband was previously a Kitabi or a non-Kitabi. This is because a Muslim man is permitted to initiate marriage with a Kitabiyyah, making the continuation of the existing contract preferable. There is no disagreement on this among those who permit the marriage of a Kitabiyyah.
