Is the selection of a woman based on intelligence and lineage important?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Marriage
Primary text
A woman of sound intellect (*'aql*) must be chosen, and foolish women (*hamqa*) must be avoided because marriage is intended for companionship, which is not sustainable with the foolish, and such companionship may negatively affect the children. It is said: 'Avoid the foolish, for their children are lost, and their companionship is affliction.' Furthermore, a woman of good lineage (*hasība*) should be chosen so that her offspring may be noble, as the children often resemble the family of the mother and are drawn toward them. Therefore, it is advised to look at the father and brother of the woman before marrying her. Aisha narrated that the Prophet said: 'Choose well for your semen, and marry those of equal social standing (*al-akfā'*), and marry your daughters to those of equal standing.'
