Primary text

There are differing narrations from Ahmad regarding the conditions of suitability. One narration states that only two conditions are considered: Religion (Dīn) and Lineage/Status (Mansib). Another narration states five conditions: these two, Freedom (Hurriyah), Profession (Sina'ah), and Wealth (Yasar). The view supported by the jurists tends toward lineage being the only nullifying factor, as it is an inherent defect that descends to the offspring, whereas the others are not necessarily inherited defects.

Malik and Shafi'i held that only Religion is a condition. Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah mentioned five conditions, excluding Religion sometimes, and including freedom from four major defects. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan did not consider Religion a condition unless the person is known for excessive drinking and mockery, as general dissoluteness among soldiers is often overlooked.
