Those forbidden due to direct kinship are seven categories: mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal aunts (sisters of the father), maternal aunts (sisters of the mother), the daughters of the brother, and the daughters of the sister. Mothers include all those related through birth, whether literally (she who gave birth to you) or figuratively, extending to grandmothers (both paternal and maternal grandmothers of the mother and father) and ascending through all generations, irrespective of inheritance rights. Daughters include every female related through one's own birth, including the daughter of the son and the daughter of the daughter, descending through all degrees, irrespective of inheritance rights, based on the verse, "and your daughters" (Quran 4:23). Sisters include those from both parents, from the father only, or from the mother only, based on "and your sisters" (Quran 4:23). Paternal aunts are the sisters of the father from all three relations, and sisters of the grandfathers from both the paternal and maternal sides, near or far, inheritor or not, based on "and your paternal aunts" (Quran 4:23). Maternal aunts are the sisters of the mother from all three relations, and sisters of the grandmothers ascending, based on "and your maternal aunts" (Quran 4:23). The daughters of the brother and the daughters of the sister are also forbidden based on the respective Quranic injunctions.
