Primary text

A freed slave is forbidden from lending an animal (*i'arat dabah*). This ruling is held by Shafi'i and the Ashab al-Ra'y because it constitutes an uncompensated donation of their property.

Supporting text

The opposing view holds that lending the animal is permissible because it is allowed for someone who has been granted permission (*ma'dhun lahu*) and the freed slave's status should not be lowered.
