Book of Mukātaba (Contractual Manumission)
Primary text
If the master neither accepts the payment nor absolves the debt, the *mukatab* may deposit the funds with the judge (*Hakim*). The *mukatab* then demands that the judge accept the funds on his behalf. The judge will then assume responsibility for accepting the funds and manumitting the slave. This precedent is established by reports concerning Umar and Uthman, who acted in this manner when the *mukatab* refused to accept his payment.
