Primary text
The wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him, were not required to veil themselves from a Mukatab even if he still owed a dinar. This is derived from a report by Sa'id, citing Abu Qilabah, that the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) did not veil from a Mukatab upon whom a dinar remained due. Furthermore, the statement that if one of the Prophet's wives had a Mukatab who acquired what he owed, she should not veil from him, indicates that the consideration is based on the entirety of the paid amount, establishing that freedom may be conditional upon full payment, even if partial repayment warrants returning some right to him.
