What is the ruling on the validity of a female slave's manumission contract (*kitabah*)?

The manumission contract of a female slave (*Amat*) is valid, just as the contract for a male slave is valid. There is no difference of opinion among scholars on this matter. This is supported by the Hadith concerning Barirah and the Hadith concerning Juwayriyah bint al-Harith. Furthermore, she falls under the general ruling of the Quran: {And those who seek a contract for what your right hands possess from those whom you desire to emancipate, so seek a contract with them if you know there is good in them} (Quran 24:33). She is like a male slave because she is capable of earning and fulfilling the payment.
