There is no scholarly dispute that a manumitted person is not liable for Zakat while still enslaved. Upon being freed, they immediately become eligible for Zakat. The hawl (lunar year) for Zakat begins from the day of emancipation. If a full year passes and their wealth reaches the nisab (prescribed minimum threshold), Zakat becomes due. If the wealth does not reach the nisab, nothing is due. This situation is analogous to a non-Muslim who embraces Islam while possessing wealth equal to the nisab; they must complete a hawl from the time of their conversion, as they became eligible for Zakat at that point. Similarly, this applies if a master leaves wealth with their enslaved person who is subsequently freed.
