Is the denial of mutual imprecation (*li'an*) accepted from a person who previously engaged in it?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Mutual Imprecation (Li'an)
Primary text
If a person engages in mutual imprecation (*li'an*) and subsequently regains speech to deny the *li'an*, the denial is accepted regarding the *li'an* itself, specifically concerning obligations upon him. Upon denial, the husband is subject to the punishment (*hadd*) appropriate for slander, and lineage (*nasab*) is established for the child. However, the marital bond does not revert to its previous state.
Supporting text
If the person states that his original act of *li'an* was performed solely to avert the punishment for slander and to negate lineage, that statement is accepted, because the liability to the *hadd* was established only by his initial admission that he did not perform the *li'an*.
