Primary text

Four rulings are attached to the *Li'an*: two liabilities upon the accuser and two rights for the accused (the wife). The liabilities upon the accuser are the imposition of the prescribed punishment (*hadd*) and the affirmation of lineage (*nasab*). The rights granted are the permanent separation (*firqa*) and permanent prohibition of marriage (*tahrim mu'abbad*). If the accuser retracts his accusation and affirms the lineage (by disowning the result of the *Li'an* against the child), his declaration is accepted regarding the liabilities, meaning the *hadd* is waived and lineage is affirmed. However, his declaration is not accepted regarding the rights he held, meaning the permanent separation and permanent prohibition of marriage remain in effect.
