What is the recommended posture for the couple during the Li'an?

It is recommended that the couple perform the mutual imprecation while standing. The husband initiates the oath while standing, and upon his completion, the wife stands to take her oath. This is based on the narration where the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed Hilal ibn Umayyah, 'Stand and testify four testimonies.' Standing ensures the public witnesses the act, making it more public and thereby reinforcing the recommendation for a large gathering. This requirement is not obligatory.
