What happens to the oath if the husband has intercourse with one of the wives covered by the general vow?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of the Oath of Abstention (Ila')
Primary text
If the husband has intercourse with one of the wives, his oath is broken (*hanith*), and the ruling of *Ila'* is lifted for all of them because it was a single oath. Once it is broken once, he cannot be considered as having broken it a second time. The ruling of the oath ceases after its violation, unlike situations where one wife is divorced or dies, as those events do not constitute breaking the oath, allowing the vow's ruling to remain for the others. This is the established position of Imam Al-Shafi'i.
