If a master says, "So-and-so's slave is free if he enters the house," and the slave subsequently enters the house, the slave is not manumitted. This is settled without dispute because manumission is not instantaneously effective through such a statement, meaning that conditional manumission is even less effective. This is based on the principle that the condition not achieving immediate, absolute manumission means it cannot achieve it upon the condition's occurrence.
