Must the expiation (Kaffarah) for *Zihar* (wrongful comparison to one's mother) and *Haram* (the act declared forbidden, which seems contextually related to Zihar in this passage) be rendered before consummating the act?

The expiation for *Zihar* and the related prohibition (*Haram*) must be rendered before engaging in the prohibited act (such as sexual intercourse). There is scholarly consensus on this requirement. The basis for this ruling is the command in the Quran: {Then the expiation for those who vow to abstain from sexual intercourse is the freeing of a slave before they touch each other} (Quran 58:3).
