Is it permissible to perform expiation (Takfir) before taking an oath?

It is not permissible to perform expiation before taking an oath under any scholarly opinion. This constitutes presenting the ruling before its established cause or prerequisite. This is analogous to the prohibition of paying Zakat before possessing the minimum required amount (Nisab), or administering atonement for killing before the act of wounding has occurred.
