The correct ruling is that such a vow is a vow of disobedience, and its ruling is exclusively the ruling applied to all other vows of disobedience. This is concluded after reports involving Ibn Umar becoming stern with a man who vowed to slaughter himself, and Ibn Abbas initially advising the man to offer one hundred camels. However, Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham advised the man that it was merely a step of Satan, requiring seeking forgiveness and repentance. Upon reporting this back, Ibn Abbas retracted his initial statement and agreed with Abd al-Rahman's assessment.
