How must a follower (Masbuq) make up the parts of the prayer missed while following the Imam?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of the Prayer of Fear
Primary text
The ruling varies concerning what a follower must make up. One narration, which is the apparent position of the Madhhab, states that what is missed constitutes the beginning of their prayer, and what is performed with the Imam constitutes the end. This view is attributed to Ibn Umar, Mujahid, Ibn Sirin, Malik, al-Thawri, and is reported from al-Shafi'i, Abu Hanifa, Abu Yusuf, and al-Hasan ibn Hayy. The evidence cited for the counter-argument is the saying of the Prophet: 'And whatever you missed, complete it' (Muttafaq 'alayh - agreed upon by the narrators).
Supporting text
A second narration, supported by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, al-Hasan, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Makhul, At'a, al-Zuhri, al-Awza'i, Ishaq, al-Muzani, Abu Thawr, and a narration from Malik, holds that what is made up constitutes the end of the follower's prayer. This is because the missed part is truly the end of his prayer in reality, just as it is for one praying alone. Furthermore, the follower performs the Tashahhud and Taslim in the last part he makes up; if it were the beginning, the Tashahhud with the Imam would suffice. The supporters of this view interpret the narration 'And whatever you missed, make up' (which is sound) as completion, which is equivalent to making up (Qada'), and since the missed part is the beginning, it should be made up last. They also argue that since the follower reads Al-Fatiha and another Surah in what he makes up, it must be the beginning, like for someone praying alone.
