When performing the four-unit prayer of fear, when should the first group separate from the Imam?

Book of the Prayer of Fear
Primary text
When the Imam leads the four-unit prayer of fear, he divides them into two groups. He prays two units with each group. There are two opinions regarding whether the first group separates from the Imam during the first Tashahhud or when he stands up for the third unit. The first opinion holds that separation occurs when he stands for the third unit. This is the view of Malik and Al-Awza'i because the Imam needs to prolong the sitting for the waiting, and the Tashahhud is recommended to be brief, and the reward for standing is greater. Furthermore, if he waits while sitting, and the group arrives, he would stand before their Takbir, thus preventing their adherence to him in standing.

The second opinion is that separation occurs during the Tashahhud so that the second group can catch the entire third unit. Additionally, waiting while sitting is easier for the Imam, and if he waits while standing, he would need to recite a Surah in the third unit, which contradicts the Sunnah. In any case, whichever action is taken is permissible.
